Features and Seasonal Appeal of Crape-Myrtles
In the United States, crape-myrtles have traditionally been popular choices for gardens and parks throughout the South. However, many varieties are also able to survive in New York City, especially as warmer temperatures become more common.
Beyond their summer flowers, these shrubs offer beauty throughout the year. Many crape-myrtle cultivars develop attractive autumn foliage, adding seasonal interest after flowering ends. Their smooth bark, which naturally peels away to reveal shades of pink, brown, and other colors, provides visual appeal even during winter when the leaves have fallen.
Crape-Myrtle Locations in the Garden
At the Garden, most crape-myrtle plantings can be found near the Lilac Collection and around Lily Pool Terrace. Several shrubs grow beside the staircase on the southern side of the Osborne Garden, while two rows of different cultivars decorate the steps that connect the Overlook area with the Cranford Rose Garden.
The Perennial Border is home to two white-flowering crape-myrtles of the cultivar ‘Natchez’. In addition, three ‘Muskogee’ specimens grow at the southern end of Lily Pool Terrace. These plants produce purple-pink flowers and tend to bloom slightly later than many of the other crape-myrtles in the Garden.
Popular Crape-Myrtle Varieties
One notable cultivar is Lagerstroemia ‘Choctaw’, which produces an attractive display of flowers and adds a bright summer presence to the landscape. Another well-known variety is Lagerstroemia ‘Natchez’, recognized for its elegant white blossoms and strong ornamental value.
Crape-myrtles are also commonly planted along pathways and stairways, where their colorful flowers create a welcoming view for visitors moving through the Garden.
Enjoy the Summer Display
The vibrant blooms of these crape-myrtles are expected to continue throughout much of August. Their colorful flowers, attractive bark, and seasonal changes make them one of the most rewarding shrubs to admire during the warmer months. Be sure to take the opportunity to enjoy their spectacular summer show while they are in full bloom.

Sea Otter Protection: A Key to Mitigating Climate Change Impacts on Arctic Marine Ecosystems
A groundbreaking study published in Science on September 11, 2020, reveals a critical link: the drastic decline of sea otter populations off Alaska’s Aleutian Islands since the 1990s has amplified climate change’s destructive effects on the region’s widespread calcareous algae reefs. Led by marine biologist Dr. Douglas Rasher from the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Science, the international research team—including scientists from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel—documented how the loss of this keystone predator, combined with ocean warming and acidification, threatens the survival of complex coastal ecosystems. GEOMAR’s expertise in uranium-thorium limestone dating was instrumental in supporting the study’s detailed ecological reconstructions.

A Comprehensive Guide to Sculpting Animals with Clay Armatures
Sculpting animals can be a complex task because our brains often rely on general perceptions rather than anatomical facts. Features like thick fur or our emotional bond with a pet can obscure the actual physical structure of the animal. Challenges such as supporting a heavy body on thin legs or managing the sheer weight of the clay on a larger scale often frustrate beginners and professionals alike.
